Thinking of leaving your JOB? Here are a few things to consider.

If this is the year when you are thinking of leaving your job, read on. People often ask ”when is a good time to leave my job”? How can anyone else answer that for you really? And now whilst working remotely, perhaps is as good a time as any to reflect and break down what keeps you where you are and why for so long?

There are several questions that need to be asked practically and also emotionally before you can make any decisions in order to move forward or even decide to stay where you are. Remember changing from a job to a career and even vice versa is a destination with a journey and it requires both strategic and critical thinking and processes. Leaving anything requires a strategy!

Maybe, you should do a TOWS analysis or matrix to help you understand your situation so that you are able to make an informed and strategic decision, objective rather than subjective data?

Using TOWA before leaving your job.

Once you have done your TOWS you will be in a better place as to what, where, why, when, and how to progress or remain where you are, although staying put is most unlikely depending on your circumstances. Maybe you are obliged to remain o remain where you are due to family commitments but you can plan your exit strategy even if it is a five-year plan.

Why leaving your job could make sense

This current situation is a huge opportunity to think about where we are and where we want to be and rewrite our narrative.

Presently career development is an area where much can be done in schools, vocational establishments, and universities as there are but a few certified and dedicated career counselors, advisers, or guidance professionals.  HR have development and training employees but they too, more often than do not have career development certification’s which is an area that needs to be addressed going forwards. With the event of remote working efficiency and effectiveness having been brought to light as well as performance. Managers will need to revisit job appraisals and reinvent the skills and competencies that need to be measured and to reevaluate essential positions. I have already heard of an HR Director whose team is 16 and only 5or 6 are actually productive! So there will be a huge need for career counseling and redeployment. Actually an opportunity to look at the TALENT WITHIN.

Public Policy implementation plus Emiratisation and the impact on schools in the first instance must be implemented as with COVID-19 we have seen with our own eyes how important it is to have visionary leaders and most of all versatile people who can adapt to the new scenario before us. Public Policy is also of vital importance and directly linked to HR practice and job seekers and actual jobs. (Dubai Government, Education Strategy. (2005)) Employees will be required to adapt and develop core skills and competencies to be deployed into alternative roles or jobs particularly when exceptional circumstances require so, and TOWS is a handy tool.

Additionally with the UAE’S historical and conceptual patterns of working its is an opportunity to provide an ideally more inclusive functional vision for the world of work jobs, careers, enterprise, and entrepreneurship. Once the public policy is mandated, operational and of course audited it will be possible to inform job and career-related activities to enhance and ensure they are effective.

Graduate Alumni who are yet to source employment is a huge challenge, especially with the Dubai Government strategy for Emiratisation, determining support, and insistence from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Hamade. (2016) Emiratisation is a national government strategy in the UAE with the explicit intention of reducing reliance on expatriate labor; encouraging Nationals to enter the workforce in the private sector not only the public. When we consider writing our own narrative for, there is a strong connection to nation and contributions. Dr. Salem AlAmeri spoke about passion, hard work, consistency, focus, and love for UAE this is indeed a time when we will all need to find our passion as it is in the end quality of life and making a difference.
